Five Things to Confirm Before Ordering
- Mobile coverage at the exact spot — Not in the nearest town — at the mounting point. Stand there, check the signal on a phone with the network you intend to use, and tell us what you see.
- Where the sun actually falls — The panel needs direct sun for a good part of the day. A tree, a neighbouring wall or a water tank shadow will quietly starve it. Winter smog and shorter days also reduce charging, so panels are sized for the worst month, not the best.
- How much you expect to record — Continuous 24 hour recording is a heavy load on a battery and on a data SIM. Event-based recording is what these systems are designed around.
- Data plan and top-ups — Someone has to keep the SIM loaded. On a farm or an absent-owner plot, this is the most common reason a working system goes dark.
- Theft of the panel itself — On an unattended plot the panel and battery are worth stealing. Mount high, use anti-tamper fixings and consider a second camera watching the first.

Does a solar camera work without WiFi and without electricity?
Yes — that is exactly what it is built for. The solar panel and battery replace the mains supply, and the 4G SIM replaces the router. The only prerequisites are usable mobile coverage at the mounting point and enough direct sunlight on the panel.
How long does the battery last without sun?
It depends on the battery capacity, how many detection events occur and how much live viewing you do. A cloudy stretch or a smog-heavy winter week is the real test. We size the panel and battery for the worst season rather than for a good day, and where a site is critical we recommend a larger panel than the minimum.
How much data does it use?
Recording to the SD card uses none. Data is consumed by live viewing, event clip uploads and cloud storage if enabled. Heavy live viewing on a mobile SIM adds up quickly, so we configure the camera for event-based use and let you view live when you need to.
Can I put several solar cameras on one plot?
Yes. Each unit is independent, with its own panel, battery and SIM, and all of them can appear in the same app. On a larger site the cost of several independent units is worth comparing against one wired system with a small solar supply feeding a recorder — we will work both options for you.
Will it record if the mobile signal drops?
Yes, recording to the memory card continues. What stops is live viewing and alerts on your phone until the signal returns. This is a genuine advantage over a purely cloud-based device.
Is this suitable for a normal house in the city?
Usually not. If the property has mains power and internet, a wired system or a <a href='/shop/wifi-cameras/'>WiFi camera</a> gives better continuous recording and lower running cost. Solar and 4G is for sites where power and internet genuinely are not available.
