About PoE Switches

Gigabit and megabit PoE switches from 4 to 24 ports, specified on power budget and cable length rather than port count alone. The PoE switch powers your cameras and carries their video to the recorder. Get it right and you never think about it again. Get it wrong and you get intermittent camera reboots, cameras that drop off at night when the illuminators come on, and a fault that is extremely hard to diagnose from the app.Two things decide the choice: the total power budget the switch can deliver across all ports, and the cable distance from the switch to each camera. Everything else on the specification sheet is secondary.

How We Size a Switch

 • Add up the real camera load, not the average — Cameras draw more at night when infrared or white light illuminators are running, and PTZ units draw more again when the motor moves. The budget must cover the worst case, with headroom.
 • Check the PoE standard each camera needs — Standard PoE, PoE+ and higher-power variants deliver different wattage per port. A PTZ or a camera with a heater may need more than a basic switch port can give.
 • Count ports for growth, not just today — An 8 port switch fully loaded with 8 cameras leaves no room for the uplink or the next camera. Leave spare ports deliberately.
 • Mind the uplink — All camera traffic funnels through the uplink port to the recorder. On a gigabit switch this is rarely a problem; on a megabit switch with several high-resolution cameras it can be.
 • Extended reach mode — Some switches offer a long-distance mode that pushes reach well beyond the standard 100 m at reduced speed. Very useful on a large plot, but check the speed trade-off against your camera bitrate.
 • Place the switch near the cameras — On a kanal or two kanal house, a small switch near the gate serving the front cameras is a better design than four long cables back to the rack.

Gigabit or Megabit, Managed or Unmanaged

ChoiceWhen it matters
GigabitMultiple high-resolution cameras, or any switch that carries other network traffic as well as video
Megabit (100 Mbps)Cost-effective for small camera counts at moderate resolution, and often paired with an extended-reach mode
UnmanagedStraightforward camera installations where the switch simply needs to power and pass traffic
ManagedOffices and larger sites where VLANs, port isolation and monitoring are wanted — usually alongside structured cabling
AI / watchdog featuresAutomatic recovery of a camera that has stopped responding, which saves a site visit for a hung device

Installation Points We Insist On

Surge protection and earthing

Cameras on rooftops, poles and boundary walls expose the switch to surge. Proper earthing at the rack protects everything downstream of it.

Backed-up power

If the switch loses power, every camera on it goes dark even though the recorder is still running. Switch, NVR and router all belong on the same backed-up circuit.

Ventilation

A PoE switch under full load produces real heat. In a closed rack through a Lahore summer, airflow is not optional.

Labelled patching

Every port labelled to its camera position. It takes ten extra minutes at install and saves hours on every future fault.

Quality patch leads

Poor patch cords are a surprisingly common cause of intermittent camera faults. We use proper leads and terminate to standard.

Headroom in the budget

We do not specify a switch that sits at its power ceiling on day one. Cameras get added; budgets should allow for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a PoE switch if my NVR already has PoE ports?

Not necessarily. A PoE NVR powers cameras directly from its own ports, which is enough for many small systems. You need a separate switch when you have more cameras than recorder ports, when cameras are clustered far from the recorder, or when the recorder's power budget is not sufficient for the cameras you are fitting.

How many cameras can an 8 port PoE switch run?

Up to eight, provided the total wattage of those cameras stays within the switch's power budget and one port is not needed for the uplink. Cameras with illuminators, heaters or motors change that arithmetic, which is why we calculate on the actual models rather than the port count.

What happens if I exceed the power budget?

The switch stops supplying full power, and typically the last cameras to be connected go offline or reboot repeatedly. This tends to appear at night when illuminators come on, which makes it look like a camera fault rather than a switch fault. Sizing correctly at the start avoids it entirely.

Can a PoE switch send power further than 100 metres?

Standard operation is up to about 100 metres including patch leads. Some switches offer an extended-reach mode that goes further at reduced speed, which suits low-bitrate cameras on a long run. On larger plots the better answer is usually a second switch closer to the cameras.

Do I need a managed switch for CCTV?

For a straightforward camera system, unmanaged is fine and simpler to support. Managed switches earn their place in offices and larger sites where the camera network shares infrastructure with data and needs to be separated, monitored or segmented.

Will the cameras stay on during load shedding?

Only if the switch is on backup power. Many people fit a UPS for the recorder and forget the switch, then find recording continued with black screens. We put the NVR, switch and router on the same protected supply.
