Wired or Wireless — Which Suits Your House
Wireless retrofit is the right answer for a finished house. Smart modules go behind existing switch plates, sensors are battery powered, and no walls are cut. It is quick, reversible and the usual choice in an occupied home. The trade-off is that it depends on solid WiFi coverage, which in a kanal house with thick walls means planning access point placement rather than hoping the single ISP router reaches the far bedroom.
Wired automation belongs to new construction. Control cable run to each switch position and load during grey structure gives you the most reliable result and the cleanest wall plates, and it is not a retrofit — once the plaster is on, that option is gone.
Most Lahore homes end up with a hybrid: wired where the building work allows it, wireless everywhere else. We are happy to say when automation is not worth the money in a particular room, which is more often than the industry likes to admit.

Load Shedding, Solar and Automation in Lahore
Rooftop solar has spread quickly across Pakistan — net-metered capacity reached roughly 6,978 MW by June FY2026, up from about 190 MW in FY2020, and net-metering connections passed 250,000 in early 2026. New prosumers moved from net metering to net billing under the Prosumer Regulations 2026, effective 8 February 2026. In practice that means a large share of Lahore homes now run a hybrid inverter with a battery bank.
For automation, the practical question at survey is not whether you have backup. It is which circuits sit on the backed-up side of the DB. A smart switch module on a raw grid circuit is simply a dead switch during load shedding, and a hub or router on the wrong circuit takes the whole system offline even though the lights themselves are powered.
We map this at survey: hub, router and ONU on backup as a minimum, plus the lighting circuits you actually care about at night. Where a gate motor or door controller is included, its supply is planned the same way, because a gate that will not open during an outage is a daily irritation rather than an occasional one.
Voltage fluctuation and low voltage are reported across several Lahore localities, and surge on external runs is a genuine failure mode. Automation modules are electronics in a wall box — surge protection and proper earthing are worth the small cost.
If You Are Still Building, Do These Six Things
Almost every expensive automation regret traces back to a decision made at grey structure.
- Deeper switch boxes — Smart modules sit behind the plate and need room. Standard shallow boxes are the single most common obstacle to a clean retrofit later.
- Neutral at every switch position — Many smart switch modules need a neutral at the switch box. Adding one afterwards means opening a wall you have just painted.
- Conduit and pull strings everywhere — Even where you are not automating now. Spare conduit with a draw string turns a future addition into an afternoon instead of a renovation.
- Plan WiFi coverage, not just an ISP router — Cabled access point positions on each floor, so the far bedroom and the roof stairs are properly covered.
- Decide the backed-up circuits early — Agree with your electrician which lighting, hub and network circuits go on the inverter side, before the DB is finalised.
- Run the gate and door cabling now — Video door phone, gate motor and door lock cabling from the gate to the house is trivial before the driveway is laid and awkward afterwards.
Automation Alongside Your Existing Systems
Automation, cameras and access control all end up in the same walls, on the same network and often on the same backup supply. Planning them together saves a second round of cable pulling and gives you one contractor to call when something stops working.
Practical overlaps worth mentioning at survey: outdoor lighting on a schedule improves what your cameras record after dark, far more cheaply than upgrading the cameras; a video door phone at the gate and a camera covering the same approach serve different purposes and should not be treated as substitutes; and a smart lock on the main door of a house is a different product from the access control you would put on an office door, so tell us which you actually want.

Frequently asked questions
Do the normal wall switches still work after automation?
Yes, and that is a design requirement rather than a nice-to-have. Smart modules fit behind your existing plates and the switch continues to operate the light normally. Guests, children and domestic staff should never need an app to turn on a light.
What happens during load shedding?
Whatever is on the backed-up circuit keeps working. We put the hub, router and ONU on backup as standard, along with the lighting circuits you rely on at night. If a smart module sits on a raw grid circuit, it is dead during an outage — so the circuit mapping is done at survey, not afterwards.
Does automation need internet all the time?
Local control — wall switches, scenes and most sensor automations — continues without internet on a properly designed system. Internet is needed for control from outside the house and for notifications. Systems that depend entirely on the cloud for basic switching are worth avoiding in Pakistan.
Can automation be added to a house that is already built and painted?
Yes. A wireless retrofit puts modules behind existing switch plates without cutting walls. The two things that can complicate it are shallow switch boxes with no room behind the plate, and switch positions with no neutral. We check both at survey before quoting.
Is a smart lock safe if the battery dies or the power goes?
Reputable smart locks are battery powered independently of the mains and warn you well before the battery is exhausted, and they retain a physical key override. We will not fit a main-door lock that leaves the household with no mechanical way in.
Can I start small and expand later?
Yes, and for most households that is the right approach. Start with the gate, the front door and the main lighting circuits, live with it for a while, then add rooms. Ask us to leave spare conduit and capacity so the expansion stays straightforward.
