The Door Side — What Else You Will Need

A reader on the wall is only part of the job. These items usually appear on the same quotation.

  • The right lock for the door — Magnetic locks, electric strikes and drop bolts each suit different doors and frames. Send us a photo of the door and frame and we will specify correctly.
  • Exit button or request-to-exit sensor — So people can get out from the inside without a credential. This is a safety matter, not an optional extra.
  • Power supply and battery backup — With load shedding, a lock and reader with no backup means either a door stuck shut or a door left open. Decide which behaviour you want on power loss — for fire exit routes, take proper advice.
  • Door position sensor — Tells the system whether the door actually closed, and can alarm if it is propped open.
  • Cabling from reader to controller — Runs are planned with the rest of the low-voltage cabling, ideally at the same time as CCTV.
  • Software and reporting — Attendance reports and payroll export depend on the software supplied —.

Frequently asked questions

Fingerprint or face — which should I choose?

For an office, fingerprint is proven and economical. For a factory or workshop, face recognition is usually the better answer because fingerprints of staff working with tools, chemicals or heavy materials often fail to read, and a device that rejects people at shift change causes queues and arguments. Tell us the work environment and we will advise.

Can one device handle both attendance and door opening?

Many can, and it is a common setup at a main entrance. The difference is that door opening needs a lock, an exit button and a suitable power supply, so the installation is more involved than a standalone attendance terminal. We quote the two scopes separately so you can see the cost of each.

What happens to the door during a power cut?

That depends on the lock type and how it is wired, and it is a decision you make deliberately. Magnetic locks release when power is lost; other lock types hold. With regular load shedding, battery backup for the door system is strongly recommended, and on any route used as a fire exit you must ensure people can always get out.

How many users can a device hold?

Capacity for fingerprints, faces, cards and stored records varies by model, and is listed on the specification sheet we send with the quotation. Tell us your staff headcount and expected growth and we will recommend a device with sufficient capacity rather than one you outgrow in a year.

Can the attendance data be accessed remotely?

Most current devices support network connection so records can be pulled without standing at the machine, and some support cloud access. This depends on the model and on your network setup — confirm the requirement with us and we will specify accordingly.
