Cabling, Racks and Doing It Once
Camera cabling in a workplace should be part of the structured cabling, not an afterthought stapled along a skirting board. That means Cat6 to each point, a patch panel in the rack, labelled ports at both ends and data kept away from parallel power runs. Six months later, when a camera goes offline, a labelled port turns a two-hour hunt into a two-minute check.
Where a run to a far corner or an adjoining block exceeds 100 metres, the fix is a second switch at an intermediate point or a fibre link, not a longer copper cable. We size the PoE switch to the real camera load with headroom, because a switch running at its power ceiling drops cameras at exactly the wrong moment.
The recorder belongs in a ventilated, lockable position — a rack in the IT room, not on top of a cupboard in the corridor. Anyone who can reach the recorder can wipe it, which defeats the entire system.
Staff Privacy and Sensible Limits
Workplace cameras work better when staff understand them. These are the boundaries we recommend to every client.
- No cameras in washrooms or prayer areas — There is no scenario in which this is acceptable, and we will not install them.
- Audio normally disabled — Recording staff and visitor conversations is a different matter to recording movement. We leave audio off unless there is a clear, agreed reason.
- Overview, not surveillance of individuals — Cameras cover areas and entry points. A camera fixed on one employee’s desk or screen creates grievances and rarely solves anything.
- Tell staff in writing — A short written notice and signage at the entrance removes most objections before they start.
- Restrict who can view — Separate accounts with per-channel permissions so a floor supervisor sees their floor and not the accounts room.
- Log the exports — Keep a simple record of who exported which clip and why, so footage handling is traceable.
Power, Generators and Staying Recorded
Lahore workplaces almost always have a generator or a UPS already, and the system still fails if the recorder is on the wrong circuit. The recorder, the PoE switch and the internet router all need to be on the protected supply, otherwise you lose both recording and remote access for the changeover window.
Generator changeover also puts electrical noise and surge onto the supply. A rack-level UPS with surge protection is worth more here than in a home, and long external runs to gate or parking cameras should have surge protection and proper earthing at the outdoor end.

How many cameras does a single office floor need?
Six to twelve is the usual range for one floor covering reception, corridor, open work area, server room, store and back exit. Cash handling, multiple entrances or a parking area push it higher.
Can we install cameras and biometric attendance in the same job?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it because both use the same cable routes and the same rack. Doing them separately means opening the same ceiling twice.
Are we allowed to put cameras where staff work?
Covering shared areas, entrances and cash points is normal practice. We advise informing staff in writing, putting signage at the entrance and avoiding cameras aimed at individual desks or screens, which is where most disputes come from.
Can each manager see only their own area?
Yes. Recorders support multiple user accounts with per-channel permissions, so a branch or floor manager sees their own cameras while the full system stays with the owner or the IT administrator.
Will you provide an invoice for company records?
