Recording Is Only Half the System
Almost every enquiry includes the same line: I want to see it on my mobile. It sounds like a settings toggle, and on a well-planned system it nearly is. On a badly planned one it becomes a permanent irritation — the app works at home but not on mobile data, the live view stutters, notifications arrive an hour late, or everything goes offline the moment the power does.
None of that is really a camera problem. It is a network, power and account-permissions problem, and it is the part of the job most installers skip. StrixLink sets remote access up as part of handover and will also come and fix it on a Pollo system somebody else installed.

How Remote Viewing Actually Works
Modern recorders and cameras connect out to the manufacturer’s cloud service using the device serial number, and your app finds the device through that service. You scan a QR code on the recorder screen, add the device to your account, and the connection is established from both ends outwards. Nothing needs to be opened on your router.
This matters in Pakistan because the older method — a fixed public IP with port forwarding, or a DDNS name — depends on your connection having a real public address. Most home and small business broadband here does not, and that is the single biggest reason older setup instructions fail.
The second thing to understand is streams. A recorder produces a high-quality main stream for recording and a smaller sub-stream for live viewing on a phone. If an app is set to pull main streams on a mobile connection, it will stutter and drain data even on a perfectly good system. Sub-stream for live view, main stream for playback and export, is the arrangement that works.
Why Remote Viewing Fails, and What Fixes It
The faults we are called out for most often, with the cause that usually turns out to be responsible.

What We Check Before Promising Remote Access
- Upload speed at the site — Remote viewing consumes upload, not download. A connection that feels fast for browsing can still be weak in the direction your cameras need.
- How many people will watch at once — Every simultaneous viewer costs another stream. Four family members opening eight cameras each is a very different load to one owner checking two.
- Router and ONU on backup — The most common reason remote view dies while recording continues. It is a power question, not a camera question.
- The recorder is the record of truth — Local recording keeps running whether the internet works or not. Remote access is the window onto it, not a substitute for it.
- Accounts before passwords are shared — Separate limited accounts for staff and family, so nobody has to hand out the administrator login.
- Time and date correct — An incorrect recorder clock makes every exported clip harder to rely on. We set and verify it at handover.
Multiple Users and Multiple Branches
Once more than one person needs access, permissions matter more than the app itself.
Sub-accounts with limited rights
A viewer account can be allowed live view but not playback, or playback but not export, and only on the channels you choose.
Per-branch visibility
Each branch manager sees their own site. The owner sees every site from one login, without handing the administrator password to anyone.
Device grouping
Branches grouped in the app so you can move between sites quickly instead of scrolling a long device list.
Access that can be withdrawn
When a manager leaves, you disable one account. If everyone shares one password, you have to change it everywhere and tell everyone the new one.
Desktop client for the office
A workstation client handles a large multi-site view far better than a phone and is the right tool for anyone reviewing regularly.
Alerts to the right person
Notifications routed to the account responsible for that site, so alerts reach someone who can actually act on them.
Sites With No Internet or No Power
Not every property has broadband. For an under-construction plot, a farmhouse, a boundary wall or a site where the ONU has not arrived yet, a 4G camera with a SIM handles its own connection and records to an SD card or cloud, with viewing through the same kind of app.
Where there is no reliable electricity either, a solar and 4G camera is the honest answer rather than trenching power across a plot that is about to be built on. The trade-offs are worth stating plainly: SIM data costs recur monthly, battery performance drops in a run of overcast days, and SD card storage holds far less than a recorder with a hard disk.
Systems with a proper recorder also keep working without internet. Recording continues, playback works on the local monitor, and you can view over the local network. You simply lose the ability to check it from elsewhere until the connection comes back.
Keeping Remote Access Secure
A camera system reachable from the internet deserves the same care as your bank login. These are the basics we apply on every handover.
- Change every default password — Default and installer-set passwords are the most common route into camera systems worldwide. Nothing leaves our hands on a default.
- Unique passwords per device — One password reused across the recorder, cameras and the router means one leak compromises everything.
- Prefer cloud or P2P over open ports — Forwarding a recorder's web port straight to the internet exposes the login page to anyone scanning. Use the manufacturer's connection method instead.
- Keep firmware current — Security fixes arrive through firmware. We check versions during maintenance visits rather than leaving devices untouched for years.
- Remove access when people leave — Staff, tenants and former committee members should lose their accounts when their role ends, on the day it ends.
- Be realistic about guarantees — Good configuration substantially reduces risk. Nobody can promise an internet-connected system is immune, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does.

Can I watch my cameras in Pakistan from abroad?
Yes, through the recorder's app once the site has a working internet connection. Performance depends on the upload speed at the property rather than your connection overseas, so use the sub-stream for live view and expect playback of high-resolution footage to take longer to load.
Why does port forwarding not work on my connection?
Most home and small business connections in Pakistan sit behind carrier-grade NAT, which means there is no public address on your router to forward. The cloud or P2P method built into modern recorders works around this and is what we set up by default.
Do the cameras keep recording if the internet goes down?
Yes. A recorder stores footage locally regardless of the internet. You lose remote viewing and notifications until the connection returns, but nothing is lost from the recording itself.
Why does remote viewing stop during load shedding when the cameras are on a UPS?
Because the internet router and ONU are usually on a normal socket. Recording continues on backup while the connection drops. Putting the router and ONU on the same protected supply fixes it.
How much internet speed do I need?
Upload is what matters. A single sub-stream is modest, but every additional simultaneous viewer and every extra camera multiplies the demand, so we check the site's actual upload speed rather than quoting a figure that suits the sales pitch.
Can my staff view cameras without having full control?
Yes. Sub-accounts can be limited to specific channels, and to live view only, without playback or export rights. This is the correct approach instead of sharing the administrator password.
Can I view cameras from several branches in one app?
Yes, with each site added to the same account and grouped by branch. Managers get accounts limited to their own site while the owner sees everything from one login.
Is cloud recording better than a recorder?
For most premises the local recorder is the record of truth, with the cloud as convenience or a backup for a few important cameras. Cloud-only makes sense mainly for one or two cameras on a site with no space or no power for a recorder.
