IP vs Analog CCTV

Network cameras on a PoE NVR, or HDCVI, AHD and TVI cameras on a DVR? Both are current, both are sold new, and the right answer is decided by your cable, your distances and your plans, not by which one sounds more modern.

Compare the two ranges

Both technologies are alive and both are sold new

The internet will tell you analog CCTV is finished. It is not. Modern HDCVI, AHD and TVI cameras deliver high definition over the same coaxial cable that older systems used, and they remain the sensible choice on plenty of sites.

Equally, network cameras are not automatically the premium option. An IP system carries a switch, an IP scheme and a network that has to be maintained. On a small shop with existing coax, that is complexity nobody asked for.

The useful comparison is therefore not which technology is better in the abstract, but which one fits the building you already have and the system you expect to own in five years.

When analog is the right call

You already have coaxial cable in the walls

Reusing the existing cable removes the messiest and most disruptive part of a retrofit. On a plastered house or an occupied shop, that saving is substantial and immediate.

The building is finished and cable routes are hard

Where every new run means casing on a painted wall, the fewer new cables you pull, the better the finish and the lower the disturbance.

The system is small and unlikely to grow

A shop with four cameras and a counter to watch does not need a managed network. A DVR keeps the whole thing simple to own and simple to service.

You want a system that is widely serviceable

DVR systems are familiar to most technicians in Lahore. That matters when you need someone at short notice and we are not the only option available to you.

When IP is worth the extra

You are cabling from scratch

In a grey structure, or during an office fit-out, running Cat6 costs little more than coax and gives you one cable per camera carrying both data and power.

You want analytics you can rely on

Human and vehicle classification that cuts false alerts, line crossing, number plate reading at a controlled gate and auto tracking on a PTZ are all stronger on the network side.

The site is large or multi-building

Factories, warehouses, campuses and multi-branch businesses benefit from cameras that live on a network, with distribution points instead of one long run per camera.

You are planning a control room

Where a video wall, decoders and a keyboard controller are part of the plan, an IP backbone is the natural foundation and scales cleanly.

The hybrid route most Lahore retrofits actually take

The choice is not always exclusive. An XVR style hybrid recorder accepts analog cameras on existing coax and network cameras on the LAN at the same time. That gives a very practical upgrade path.

A common pattern looks like this. The existing coaxial runs stay in place with modern HD analog cameras on them. The two or three positions that need the most detail, typically the gate and the entrance, are done as network cameras on new Cat6. Over time, as walls open for other work, more positions migrate.

This avoids the two bad outcomes: throwing away serviceable cable, and locking a site into a technology it will outgrow. If your building already has cable in it, tell us what is there before we design anything, because it usually changes the recommendation.

Site facts that decide it faster than any spec sheet

  • What cable is already installed — Coax from an old system, spare conduit, or nothing at all. This is the single biggest factor in a retrofit.
  • The longest run on the site — If any camera sits far beyond 100 metres of cable path from the rack, an IP design needs a midpoint switch and that must be planned, not improvised.
  • Whether the building is occupied — Occupied premises favour minimal new cabling. Empty or under-construction buildings favour doing it properly now.
  • Backup power available at the rack — An IP system puts the PoE switch in the critical path. If it is not on backup, cameras stop even though the recorder is alive.
  • Whether you need a control room or a video wall — Decoders, controllers and multi-screen layouts point firmly towards a network based design.
  • How many sites will eventually be linked — One property or several branches with central viewing. Multi-site is where the network approach earns its keep.

What does not decide it

The word digital. Modern analog cameras produce high definition images. Older standard definition analog is what people remember when they call analog blurry, and that is not what is being sold today.

Megapixels alone. A high resolution camera with the wrong lens, poor night handling or a bad angle produces a worse usable image than a modest camera placed correctly. Placement outranks technology on both sides.

What the neighbour installed. Their cable route, plot size and requirements are not yours. The comparison worth making is between your own site conditions and the two options, which is exactly what a survey establishes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect IP cameras to my existing DVR?

Not to a plain analog DVR. A hybrid XVR style recorder can take both analog and network cameras together, which is the usual way to add IP cameras to an existing system without replacing everything. Send us your recorder model and we will confirm what it supports.

Can I reuse my old coaxial cable?

In most cases yes, provided the cable is intact and the runs are sound. Reusing coax with modern HD analog cameras is one of the cheapest genuine upgrades available on an already finished building.

Is IP better in low light than analog?

Low light performance comes from the sensor, the lens and the night vision technology, not from whether the signal is analog or network. Good and poor performers exist on both sides, which is why we specify per position rather than per technology.

What happens if a run is longer than 100 metres on an IP system?

You place a PoE switch or an extender at a midpoint, or set up a second distribution point closer to those cameras. On kanal and larger plots in Lahore this is normal design, not an exception, and it should appear on the quotation.

Which is cheaper overall?

On a retrofit with usable coax, analog usually lands lower because the cabling work is smaller. On a new build being cabled anyway, the gap narrows considerably. Both are Contact for Price, so ask us to quote both for your specific site.

Does an IP system need a computer running all the time?

No. The NVR is the recorder and it runs on its own. A computer is only used when someone wants a large screen review station, and mobile viewing works from the recorder without one.
