Seeing Down the Aisles, Not Across Them
Racking is the reason a generic four-camera layout fails in a storage building.
One view per aisle, along the centreline
A camera at the end of an aisle looking down its length sees the whole run. A camera in the room corner sees the side of the racking and nothing else.
Mount below the top beam
Fixing cameras at the very top of a high building puts the lens above the racking, looking at box tops. Mounting at a workable height along the aisle keeps hands and cartons in frame.
Plan for layout changes
Racking gets moved. Leave slack in the cable route and use mounting positions that survive a re-layout, or you will be re-cabling within a year.
Cover the pick face, not the wall
The value is in what comes off the shelf. Aim at the pick face where hands reach in, not at the aisle floor.
Protect cable from forklifts
Never route cable at forklift height along a rack leg without protection. Cable damage from a fork is the most common physical fault on these sites.
Height and glare
High-bay lighting directly in frame will wash out a camera. Position so the fitting is behind or beside the lens, never straight ahead of it.

The Loading Bay Is the Camera That Pays for the System
If budget forces a choice, cover the bay before anything else. A dispute over what was loaded, how many cartons crossed the threshold, and which vehicle took them is the single most common and most expensive argument on a storage site.
Three angles do the work: a camera on the threshold itself so every item crossing in or out is counted, a camera looking into the vehicle bed so you can see what is stacked, and a wider camera on the apron showing the vehicle, the driver and the loading team. The threshold camera is the one people forget and the one that settles the argument.
Pair that with a plate-capture camera at the exit point and you can tie a load to a specific vehicle at a specific time, which is what a claim or an insurance query will ask for.
Retention: Sizing for Weeks, Not Days
Retention on a storage site is a business decision before it is a technical one. Ask how long it typically takes for a shortage to surface — after a stock count, after a customer complaint, after a monthly reconciliation — and size the storage to comfortably exceed that gap.
The days you get depend on the number of channels, the resolution, the frame rate, and whether cameras record continuously or on motion and event triggers. On a site with steady daytime activity and quiet nights, event-based recording overnight and continuous recording during operating hours is often the sensible balance.
The recorder should be chosen with the disk bays to reach the target, not fitted with whatever disk was in stock and reviewed later. We size it against your stated retention days as part of the quotation, and the detailed method is set out in our sizing guide.
Lighting, Dust and Power Realities
Storage buildings are often lit by high-bay fittings on motion sensors that switch off when nobody is present, which is exactly when you most want to see. Either keep a low level of light on permanently in the aisles or specify cameras with infrared or dual-light capability that can work when the hall goes dark.
Dust is the other constant. Airborne dust from pallets, packaging and forklift traffic settles on dome bubbles fast, and a soft image months later is usually a dirty bubble rather than a failing camera. Plan a scheduled clean, more frequently near dispatch doors and unpaved yards.
On power, the recorder, the switches and the internet router all belong on the protected supply. Long runs to the gate and yard need surge protection and earthing, and where a gate or a far corner has no practical power drop, a solar and 4G camera is the honest answer rather than trenching a cable across a working yard.
Owners who are not on site daily normally want the bay and the gate on their phone, which is a network and permissions question rather than a camera one.

Frequently asked questions
How many cameras does a godown need?
It depends far more on the number of aisles and bays than on the floor area. A single-hall godown with two bays and six aisles is a different scope to an open shed of the same size, which is why we survey before quoting.
How many days of recording should a storage facility keep?
Long enough to comfortably cover the gap between an event and the stock count or reconciliation that reveals it. Tell us that gap and we size the recorder and disks to exceed it rather than guessing.
Where should cameras go if the racking keeps moving?
Along the aisle centrelines at a workable height, with slack in the cable route and mounting positions chosen so a re-layout does not force re-cabling. We plan this at survey when you tell us how often the layout changes.
Can cameras record the number plate of every vehicle leaving?
Yes, with a dedicated plate-capture camera at a point where vehicles slow, at the correct angle and with night lighting considered. A general overview camera at the gate will not do this reliably.
What happens when the high-bay lights switch off?
Standard cameras will lose the image. Either keep low-level lighting on in the aisles or specify infrared or dual-light cameras that continue working in the dark, which is what we normally recommend for the aisles and bays.
Can I see the bays on my phone from another city?
Yes, with a working internet connection at the site and the router on backup power. Owner access with per-channel permissions is normal, and we set it up as part of handover.
Do you install where the site is rented?
Yes. Agree with the landlord in writing what may be fixed to the structure and what happens at lease end, and keep your recorder and footage clearly under your own control.
