How does the 250-metre extend mode actually work?

You set the unit to extend mode with the extender and CCTV mode switch, then restart it, as the change only takes effect after a restart. Ports then operate on 10BASE-TX, and that lower signalling rate is what buys the longer reach. It is a distance-for-speed exchange rather than free extra range, so plan the camera count accordingly.

Should I buy this or the Gigabit model?

Choose this one when the problem is distance and the camera count is small. Choose the Gigabit model when you want 1000 Mbps ports and a 16 Gbps fabric for higher-resolution streams. Will it handle 4K cameras?

The ports run at 10/100 Mbps and each uplink tops out at 100 Mbps, so that is the ceiling on the path to your recorder. What matters is the combined bitrate of your streams against that ceiling, not the resolution label on the box. Where the numbers come close, the Gigabit model is the safer purchase.

Can I mount it outdoors near the gate?

No weather rating is quoted for this model, and it uses a built-in AC supply, so it belongs inside a building, a cabinet, or a lockable enclosure.
