About DVRs

Digital video recorders for analog and hybrid camera systems, quoted with the right hard disk for the retention you actually need.Cameras get the attention, but when something happens it is the recorder you sit in front of. Whether footage is there, how far back it goes, and how easily a clip can be exported for a complaint — all of that is decided by the DVR and the hard disk inside it, not by the cameras on the wall.A DVR records cameras that send video over coaxial cable — HDCVI, AHD and TVI models from our analog camera range. Most current recorders are hybrid, meaning they will also take a limited number of IP channels, which is what makes a gradual upgrade possible without throwing away what you have.

Choosing the Channel Count

Buy for the system you will have in two years, not only for the cameras going in this week. Adding channels later means replacing the box.

ChannelsTypically suits
4 channelA small shop with counter, entrance, aisle and storeroom, or a compact house
8 channelA typical 8 to 10 marla house, a small office floor, or a shop with a back store
16 channelA 1 kanal house with gate, side walls, rear access and internal points, or a small commercial unit
32 channelLarger properties, plazas, schools and multi-area commercial sites
Beyond 32 channelsUsually the point to move to an IP system with an NVR and structured cabling

Sizing the Hard Disk and Retention

How many days you keep is the question people ask after an incident, not before. Decide it at purchase.

 • Retention depends on more than disk size — Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, the number of cameras and how much movement is in the scene all change how fast the disk fills. A busy road-facing camera fills storage far faster than a quiet storeroom.
 • Motion recording stretches the days — Recording only on motion greatly extends retention, but it also means the quiet moments before an event may be missing. We usually recommend continuous recording on critical channels and motion on the rest.
 • Use surveillance-rated drives — Desktop drives are not designed to be written to continuously, day and night, for years. Surveillance-grade disks are, and they fail less often in this duty.
 • Check the bay count — A recorder with one bay caps your storage at one disk. If you want long retention on many channels, buy a chassis with the bays for it.
 • Heat and dust shorten disk life — A recorder in a closed cupboard in a Lahore summer runs hot. Ventilation and a periodic clean genuinely extend the life of the disk.
 • Ask us to calculate it — Send your camera count, resolution and the number of days you want kept, and we will work out the disk size rather than guessing.

What to Look For on the Specification

Supported standards

Confirm the DVR accepts the camera standard you are using — HDCVI, AHD, TVI — and the resolution of those cameras.

Hybrid IP channels

Useful if you plan to add IP cameras later without replacing the recorder.

Playback and export

How easily can a specific time range be found and exported to a USB drive? This is the feature you will use under pressure.

Mobile app support

For viewing away from the premises. Set-up depends on your internet connection — see remote monitoring.

Network and HDMI output

Check the monitor output resolution matches the screen you intend to use, especially with a large display.

User accounts

Separate accounts with limited rights matter in a business, so that staff can view without being able to delete.

Frequently asked questions

Does the DVR come with a hard disk?

Not by default. The disk is chosen separately based on your camera count, resolution and how many days of footage you want to keep, so it is quoted as a line item alongside the recorder. Tell us your retention target and we will size it.

How many days of recording will I get?

There is no single answer, because it depends on resolution, bitrate, camera count and how much motion is in each scene. What we do is take your actual configuration and calculate it, then propose a disk that gives the retention you asked for with some margin. Send the details on WhatsApp.

Can I connect IP cameras to a DVR?

Many current recorders are hybrid and accept a limited number of IP channels alongside the analog ones, which is ideal for adding one or two higher-resolution cameras to an existing system. For a fully IP system you want an NVR instead.

My DVR has stopped recording — is it the disk?

Very often, yes. Continuous writing wears drives out, and heat in a closed cupboard accelerates it. Other common causes are power supply problems and a failed fan. Our repair and maintenance service diagnoses and replaces on site, on systems installed by anyone.

Can I export a clip for a police complaint without wiping the timeline?

Yes. Exporting a clip to a USB drive copies the footage; it does not delete anything from the disk. We show clients how to do this at handover, because doing it calmly for the first time under pressure rarely goes well.

Should I buy 4 channel or 8 channel for four cameras?

If there is any chance of adding a camera later, buy the 8 channel. The price difference is usually modest compared with replacing the recorder in a year. Ask us for both figures on WhatsApp and decide with the numbers in front of you.

Will the recorder keep working during load shedding?

Only on a backed-up supply. A small UPS covering the recorder, monitor and internet router is inexpensive and means the outage window is recorded — which is frequently the window people ask about afterwards.

Not sure which model fits your site?
