About NVRs

Network video recorders from 4 channels for a home up to 256 channels for a campus or multi-site project, sized on throughput and storage rather than port count alone. An NVR records the video streams your IP cameras send over the network. Choose it correctly and a set of 8MP cameras delivers the detail you paid for. Choose it on port count alone and you can end up with a recorder that cannot carry the total bitrate, which shows up as dropped frames and stuttering playback exactly when you need clarity. Two variants matter. A PoE NVR has built-in PoE ports, so cameras plug straight into the back of the recorder and take their power from it — neat and simple for small and medium systems. A standard NVR has no camera ports and sits on your network, with cameras powered by a separate PoE switch. That is the right architecture once cameras are spread across a building or a site.

Channel Counts and Where They Fit

ChannelsTypical application
4 and 8 channel PoE NVRHomes, small offices, shops — cameras plug directly into the recorder
16 channelLarger houses, a full office floor, a clinic or an academy
32 channelSchools, plazas, small factories, multi-floor commercial buildings
64 channelCampuses and industrial sites, usually with multiple disk bays
128 and 256 channelLarge or multi-site deployments, generally rack-mounted with RAID and redundant supplies

The Four Numbers That Decide the Right NVR

Port count is the easiest number to read and the least useful on its own.

 • Total incoming bitrate — Every camera stream has a bitrate, and the recorder has a ceiling for the sum of them. High resolution cameras at high frame rates hit that ceiling before the port count runs out. We add the streams up before recommending a model.
 • PoE power budget — A PoE NVR has a total wattage it can deliver across its ports. Cameras with heaters, illuminators or motors draw more. Exceeding the budget causes cameras to reboot intermittently, which is a miserable fault to chase later.
 • Disk bays and capacity per bay — Retention is a function of bitrate and disk space. A single-bay recorder caps what you can keep. For long retention on many channels, buy the bays.
 • Output resolution and decoding capacity — How many channels the recorder can display simultaneously at full resolution on a monitor is a separate spec from how many it can record. For a control room, this is where decoders and video walls come in.

Practical Points We Build Into Every Quotation

Surveillance-grade storage

Continuous write duty for years is a specific workload. Surveillance-rated disks are built for it; desktop drives are not.

RAID on larger systems

On 32 channels and above, a disk failure should not take the whole archive with it. We specify redundancy where the site warrants it.

Backed-up power

The NVR, the switch and the internet router all need to be on the inverter or a UPS. Recording during a power cut is the whole point.

Ventilated rack position

Recorders in sealed cupboards run hot through summer and disks fail sooner. We specify the mounting position at survey.

User accounts and access control

Separate logins for owner, manager and staff, so viewing rights and deletion rights are not the same thing.

Remote access done properly

Configured so it works on real Pakistani connections — see remote CCTV monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a PoE NVR and a normal NVR?

A PoE NVR has camera ports built into the back that supply power as well as carrying video, so cameras connect directly to the recorder. A standard NVR has no such ports and sits on the network, with cameras powered by a separate PoE switch. For a home or small office, PoE NVR is simpler. For a spread-out site, a standard NVR with switches placed near camera clusters is the better design.

Can I connect more cameras than the recorder has PoE ports?

Yes, by adding a PoE switch on the network and connecting the extra cameras through it, as long as the recorder's channel count and total bitrate capacity allow. This is a very common way to extend a system without replacing the NVR.

How many hard disks do I need?

It depends on your total bitrate and how many days you want kept. Rather than guessing, send us the camera list and the retention you want and we will calculate the storage and tell you how many bays the recorder needs.

Will my existing IP cameras work with a new NVR?

Often yes, particularly where both support standard protocols, but feature support can be partial — you may get video without full access to the camera's smart detection settings. Send us the camera model on WhatsApp before you buy and we will check rather than let you find out afterwards.

Do I need internet for the NVR to record?

No. Recording is entirely local. Internet is only needed for viewing from outside the premises and for push notifications. Keep the router on backup power if remote viewing during load shedding matters to you.

What is the largest system you supply?

The range runs up to 256 channels, and beyond a certain size we move to storage servers and a distributed design with multiple recorders. For projects of that scale email info@strixlink.com with your requirement and we will prepare a full BOQ.

How is pricing given?

Contact for Price on every recorder, because rates move with stock and exchange rate. Message us on WhatsApp for a same-day figure.

Not sure which model fits your site?

Send us the property type and how many cameras you need. We reply with the models that suit, current prices and Lahore installation charges.
