Planning a PTZ Properly

  • Mount high, but not too high — Height gives reach but flattens the angle. Too high and every face is the top of a head. We work the mounting height from what you actually need to identify.
  • The mast must be rigid — A PTZ on a flexible pole shakes in the wind, and at full zoom a small vibration becomes a useless picture. Bracing the mount is not optional.
  • Pair it with fixed cameras — Fixed cameras hold continuous coverage of the critical points; the PTZ investigates. This is the design that survives review after an incident.
  • Decide who drives it — If nobody is watching a monitor, rely on tours, auto tracking and event triggers rather than manual control. A control room needs a keyboard controller — those are in our <a href='/shop/display-control/'>display and control range</a>.
  • Check power and cable — PTZ units draw more power than fixed cameras. Some need high-power PoE, others a dedicated supply. Confirm this before the cable is pulled, not after.

Can one PTZ camera replace several fixed cameras?

No, and any supplier who says otherwise is selling rather than advising. A PTZ records only where it is pointed at that moment. The correct design is fixed cameras for continuous coverage of the points that matter, with a PTZ to investigate and zoom. On a factory boundary this combination is what actually stands up when footage is reviewed.

How does auto tracking behave in practice?

It works well on a relatively clear scene — an empty yard at night, a boundary strip, a car park after hours. On a busy scene with many people and vehicles moving, it hops between subjects and can lose the one you care about. Does a PTZ camera need a special recorder?

It records like any other channel, but PTZ control needs the recorder or client software to support the control protocol, and IP PTZ models often need higher power than standard PoE provides.
