About Dual-Light Cameras

Cameras that keep colour after dark using warm light, switch back to infrared when you want to stay discreet, and can add active deterrence.A monochrome image tells you someone was there. A colour image tells you they were wearing a red shirt, arrived on a white motorcycle and carried a black bag. When a complaint has to be filed or a face has to be recognised, that difference matters more than any megapixel count.Dual light cameras carry two illuminators — infrared for discreet monochrome recording, and a warm white LED that holds full colour. Depending on the model you can lock the camera into colour mode, leave it on infrared, or set it to switch to colour automatically when motion is detected.

The Three Ways These Cameras Are Used

Full colour, always on

The warm light stays on through the night. Best at an entrance, a counter, a forecourt or a gate where colour identification is the whole point.

Infrared by default, colour on event

The camera sits quietly in monochrome and switches to white light and colour when it detects a person or vehicle. A good balance of discretion and detail.

Active deterrence

On supported models the light strobes and an on-board siren sounds when motion is detected in a defined area. The intention is to make an intruder leave before anything happens.

Smart dual illumination

Some models blend both light sources to keep colour without flooding the scene, which helps in areas where a bright white light would be unwelcome.

Two-way audio on selected models

Allows a live voice warning through the app. Useful at a shop shutter or a rear gate.

Available in IP and analog form factors

So a colour-at-night upgrade does not always force a change of recorder or cabling.

Where to Fit Them, and Where Not To

  • Best at gates, entrances and counters — Anywhere you would want to describe a person or a vehicle to someone else afterwards.
  • Excellent on poorly lit lanes — Many streets have weak or intermittent lighting. A warm-light camera at the gate lights its own scene rather than depending on a street lamp that may be out.
  • Think about the neighbours — A white light burning all night towards a neighbouring house or courtyard causes friction. Aim tightly, use event-triggered mode, and apply privacy masking where the view spills over a boundary.
  • Deterrence needs correct detection zones — A siren that fires at every passing cat gets switched off within a week. We set detection zones and sensitivity properly at commissioning, and honestly, this is tuning work, not a box-ticking exercise.
  • Do not point the light at your own other camera — A warm light aimed across the field of view of a second camera will spoil that camera's exposure. Plan the pair together.

What is the difference between these and standard infrared cameras?

An infrared camera records in monochrome after dark. A dual light camera adds a warm white LED so it can hold full colour, and on most models you can choose which illuminator is used and when. If you only need to see that something happened, infrared is enough — see the <a href='/shop/night-vision-cameras/'>infrared range</a>. If you need to describe what you saw, choose dual light.

Will the white light stay on all night?

That is your choice. It can be locked on for a permanently lit scene, or set to trigger only when a person or vehicle is detected so that the light comes on briefly and then goes off. For residential streets we normally recommend the triggered mode.

How loud is the siren on active deterrence models?

Loud enough to be noticed from the property and its immediate surroundings; the exact output varies by model and is listed on the specification sheet we send with your quotation. What matters more than volume is that the detection zone is set correctly so it fires when it should and not otherwise.

Can I add these to my existing system?

Usually yes. There are IP and analog versions, so in most cases you can upgrade one or two key positions without replacing the recorder or the cabling. Send us your recorder model on WhatsApp and we will confirm compatibility first.

Will the light annoy my neighbours?

It can, if it is aimed carelessly. We set the angle so it lights your own frontage rather than someone's courtyard or window, use event-triggered mode where appropriate, and apply privacy masking to any part of the view that crosses a boundary. This is one of the most common causes of neighbourhood disputes and it is entirely avoidable.

Do these work in colour during a power cut?

Only if the camera and recorder are powered. On a system fed from an inverter or a UPS they continue exactly as normal. If the recorder circuit is on raw grid supply, everything stops with the electricity — which is why we insist on getting the rack onto the backed-up circuit.
