About Night-Vision Cameras

Infrared cameras for gates, boundary walls, yards and dark lanes, chosen by IR range rather than by the number on the box.Daytime performance is easy. What separates a useful camera from a decorative one is what it produces at 2am on an unlit lane. Infrared night vision works by flooding the scene with IR light that the sensor can see and the eye cannot, then recording in monochrome. Done well, it gives you a clean, usable picture. Done badly, it gives you a white blur.Every camera in this category is Contact for Price. Tell us the distance from the mounting point to the area you need covered, and whether there is any street light, and we will recommend the IR range that suits rather than the biggest number available.

The Five Things That Decide Night Picture Quality

 • Stated IR range is a maximum, not a working range — The quoted distance is measured in ideal conditions. Plan for usable detail at a good margin inside it, especially if you need to identify a face rather than just see movement.
 • IR bounces back off nearby surfaces — Mount a camera tight under a shed roof, behind a pillar or against a wall and the IR reflects straight into the lens, washing the whole image out. Give the camera clearance.
 • Glass reflects IR completely — A camera pointed through a window at night will mostly record its own IR reflection. Cameras go outside the glass, or the IR is switched off and the scene is lit another way.
 • Wide lenses spread the IR thin — The same IR power over a wider field means less reach. Two cameras with tighter views often beat one wide camera trying to do both jobs.
 • Insects and spiders love IR — Webs across the lens are the most common night-vision complaint we attend. Positioning, an annual clean and keeping the camera away from bright bulbs all help.

Where Infrared Cameras Are the Right Choice

Boundary walls and rear alleys

Areas with no lighting at all, where the only light at night will be the camera's own.

Main gates and driveways

The most commonly requested night shot in Pakistani homes, and the one most often mounted too high to be useful.

Rooftops and stair access

Roof entry is a real route in dense neighbourhoods, and it is almost always unlit.

Yards, godowns and open storage

Wide, dark spaces where detecting that someone is present matters more than reading a face.

Unlit village and farm approaches

Where mains lighting simply does not exist along the approach road.

Corridors and stairwells after hours

Buildings where lights are switched off overnight but coverage must continue.

Matching the Camera to the Distance

Use this as a starting point, then confirm on site. Actual performance depends on the lens, the scene and how much stray light is around.

What you are coveringDesign consideration
Porch or doorway, a few metresShort IR range is enough; the bigger risk is IR washout from nearby walls
House gate and drivewayMount at a height where a face is captured, not just the top of a head
Boundary wall along a long sideTwo cameras looking along the wall usually beat one looking across it
Open yard or plotLonger IR range plus a lens choice that keeps detail at the far end
Lane or street mouthConsider what you actually need — presence, face, or vehicle — before choosing the lens

When Infrared Is Not the Answer

Infrared records in monochrome. If the detail you need is colour — the colour of a shirt, a vehicle or a bag — an IR-only camera will not give it to you no matter how sharp the image is. For those cases we fit cameras that hold full colour after dark using a supplementary light source. Those models sit in our dual light and colour-at-night range.

For a home, the practical mix is often IR on the dark perimeter and colour-capable cameras at the gate and entrance where identification matters. We work this out at survey — see home CCTV installation for how that fits together.

Frequently asked questions

How far can these cameras really see at night?

The stated IR range is measured under ideal conditions. As a rule, plan for reliable detail comfortably inside that figure, and remember that seeing that someone is there and identifying who they are need very different distances. Send us the actual distance and we will recommend accordingly.

Why does my night picture look white and washed out?

Almost always IR reflecting back into the lens from something close by — a wall, a pillar, a roof edge, a spider web or a dusty dome bubble. Repositioning the camera or cleaning the housing fixes most cases. If it persists, our repair service can look at it.

Will the camera work through a window?

Not well. At night the infrared reflects off the glass and you record the reflection instead of the scene. Cameras belong on the outside of the glass, or the IR must be switched off and the area lit separately.

Is the night image in colour?

No, infrared night vision records in monochrome. If colour after dark matters to you, look at the dual light range, which uses supplementary lighting to hold colour.

Does dust and smog affect night performance?

Yes. Lahore's smog season and general road dust build a film on the lens cover and dome bubble that scatters IR light and softens the picture. An annual clean, and more often on heavy-traffic frontages, makes a visible difference.

Do night vision cameras use more electricity?

The IR illuminators do draw additional power at night, which matters when you are sizing a UPS or a PoE switch budget for a larger system. On a small system the difference is minor.
