Camera Shapes and Where They Actually Suit

Shape is not a style choice. It decides how the camera is mounted, how it handles infrared glare and how easily it can be aimed.

2MP, 4MP, 5MP and 8MP in Plain Terms

Higher resolution is not automatically better. More pixels also means more storage, so the recorder and hard disk have to be sized along with the camera.

2MP (1080p)

Still the workhorse for short-range indoor use — a small shop counter, a room, a porch. At close distance it shows clearly what happened.

4MP

The common upgrade. More pixels across the same field of view means you can zoom into recorded footage and still make something out.

5MP

Useful where the camera has to sit back a bit — a courtyard, a forecourt, a driveway — and you still want usable detail at the far end.

8MP / 4K

For wide areas you would otherwise need two cameras to cover. Budget the extra storage with it, because a 4K stream fills a disk much faster.

Lens and field of view

A wide lens sees more but shrinks faces. A narrower or varifocal lens sees less width but keeps detail at distance. This choice matters more than megapixels.

Indoor vs outdoor build

Outdoor units need weather-rated housing, a properly sealed junction box and a decent cable gland. In monsoon, water gets in at the joints, not through the camera body.

  • How many points you want covered — A rough list is enough — gate, main door, backyard, counter, store.
  • Indoor or outdoor for each point — This decides housing, mounting and cable route.
  • Existing cable, if any — Old coaxial cable usually points to an analog or hybrid solution. Cat6 already run means IP is straightforward.
  • Night light conditions — Is the area lit by a street light or bulb, or is it fully dark? This changes the camera type, not just the settings.
  • How many days of recording you want to keep — This sets the recorder channel count and hard disk size.
  • Who is installing — Supply only, or supply with installation — say so up front and the quote reflects it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2MP camera enough, or should I go straight to 8MP?

It depends on distance, not on preference. For a shop counter or a room, 2MP at close range is often clearer than 8MP mounted far away with a wide lens. For a long driveway or an open yard, higher resolution earns its cost. Tell us the distance from the camera position to the point of interest and we will recommend the sensible option rather than the expensive one.

Can I mix different camera types on one recorder?

Within the same technology, yes — bullet, dome and turret models of the same family run together happily on one recorder. Mixing analog and IP cameras needs a hybrid recorder that supports both. Send us your existing recorder model on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it will accept before you buy anything.

Do the cameras come with a hard disk?

No. Cameras record to the DVR or NVR, and the hard disk is selected separately based on how many days of footage you want to keep. We size the disk with the recorder — see the <a href='/shop/dvrs/'>DVR range</a> or the <a href='/shop/nvrs/'>NVR range</a> for that part of the system.

Can I buy cameras only and have my own electrician fit them?

Yes, supply-only orders are welcome and we will still help with sizing so you do not order the wrong recorder or cable. Just be aware that most call-backs we attend on other people's installations are cable, connector and power faults rather than camera faults.

How do I get a price if I do not know the model code?

You do not need one. Send a photo of the location and tell us how many points you want covered, and we will propose specific models with a Contact for Price quotation against each. Message us on WhatsApp.
